Who is God revealing Himself to be in this passage? (Genesis 2)
God reveals Himself to be a God who not only works, but also rests. After creating the world in six days, God rested from His works on the seventh day. (Genesis 2:2) Not only does He rest from His works, He also blesses the day He rested. (Genesis 2:3)
God reveals Himself to be the giver of life. Adam did not become a living being until God breathed into his nostrils the breadth of life. (Genesis 2:7). We are alive only because God’s breadth is in us. We must always remember this and not take our lives for granted.
God reveals Himself to be a God who wants to please us. He could have made the trees boring and dull and the fruits tasteless and not good for us. Yet, he actually made trees that are pleasing to the eyes and good for food. (Genesis 2:9)
God reveals Himself to be our master and chooses to give responsibilities to us. He gave Adam a job– the job to work the garden of Eden and take care of it. (Genesis 2:15) He could have just created us and left us alone but instead, He entrusted us with responsibilities.
God reveals Himself to be a God who gives free-will to men. He gave Adam a choice to either obey Him or disobey Him. (Genesis 2:16-17) God could have made it very hard for Adam to obey Him by giving Adam the commandment to avoid all the trees except 1 tree. Instead, God only forbids Adam from eating from 1 tree and gives the rest of the trees freely to Him. While God gives us free will, He does not make it very hard to obey Him.
God reveals Himself to be a God who wants the best for us. Adam is alone and God knows it is not good for him. God only wants what is good for Adam. (Genesis 2:18) So, God created Eve, a helper for Adam since He only wanted what is best for Adam. (Genesis 2:22)
God reveals Himself to be a God who will share His authority with man. He could have chosen to give names to the animals Himself. Instead, He shares the authority of naming the animals with Adam and whatever Adam chose to name the animals, that became its names. (Genesis 2:19)
